Sharpie Mug Tutorial

I have been really over-thinking my gifts lately, for my “Pay It Forward” friends.  I wanted to create something unique, but also meaningful.

I found this great tutorial, while surfing the web, on how to decorate a mug with a sharpie, and the lightbulb in my head went off!

You’ll need…

- Sharpie (color in your choosing)

- Ceramic Mug

- Rubber Stamps

- Masking Tape

-Baby Wipes

-Baking Sheet

[ First ]

Remove stickers, tags and wash mugs with soap and water, then dry.

[ Second ]

Take masking tape and wrap it around the mug…just right beneath where you’d like your letters to be placed

The tape is there as a guide.

[ Third ]

Practice makes perfect!  I wanted to just write/draw, right onto the mug, but it proved really difficult on a curved surface.  So I decided to use rubber stamps instead.  The perfect/imperfect stamp effect had a vintage quality that I liked.

I stamped the letters I wanted, onto the masking tape first, so that I could see how the spacing worked out, and also so I knew where to put each letter.

 * If you’re creating more than one mug, just remove the masking tape and place it on the new mug so you don’t have to worry about trying to figure out placement again.

[ Fourth ]

Then I grabbed my sharpie and colored in one rubber stamp letter, making sure I saturated the letter well.  Then I immediately stamped the mug corresponding to the placement on the masking tape.

Take your time, and cap your marker every once in a while to keep it from drying up.

Seems easy enough right?!  Well, not gonna lie, it can get pretty “cray cray” (that’s for you Christie, MJ & Erin!)  I messed up A LOT!!  But don’t worry, nothing is permanent YET!  Any mistakes can easily be cleaned up with baby wipes.

And if you need some help keeping your mug stable, just grab a gift wrap roll and place it underneath the mug handle

Empty paper towel rolls also work.

[ Fifth ]

Once you’ve finished decorating your mug with your Sharpie, and you’re happy with it, place your mugs on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.

{ Be sure to remove any lil’ marks or scuffs that you don’t want on the mug.  Once it has been baked, anything on the mug will be permanent. }

Be careful when taking them out of the oven, they will be extremely hot!  Cool them completely.

Do you see the “C” & “P” from the handles?  I love these!  Hope Maria & Lysa love them too!

These will make perfect Christmas gifts too btw!…gonna go make a dozen more! =P

  1. I have had these down to make as Christmas gifts too! I’ve heard you still have to hand wash them after you bake them. Have you heard/seen how they have held up? Can’t wait to try this myself…thans for the great break down!!!
