Blogging: Pinterest Popularity

I have always wanted one of my own pics or DIY posts to go viral on Pinterest.  It was a secret goal of mine, and I think I may have gotten my wish!

Remember that photography post I did?

This pic gained Pinterest popularity fast!…

And I’ve been getting…wait for it, wait for it….

3 times as much hits on Laid Off Mom!

Freggin ridiculous right?!  I was doing my happy dance, when I saw the numbers jump, and stay pretty even keeled.

But then I started to think….yes, this is awesome that I’m getting all these new visitors…love seeing my numbers jump, BUT are they just one time, fly by hits, and then those peeps leave?  Or do they really check out Laid Off Mom, see what I’m all about, and say hey…”I like what I see, Imma stick around!”

I noticed some people check out my “about me” page, but not too many.

For my fellow bloggy blog friends…you guys ever have something go viral on Pinterest?  And if so, what’d you get out of it?  Loyal followers?  Or just lookee loos?

Large numbers vs. Small community of loyal follwers?

Let’s start a discussion!!

  1. Welp…I have a few things that people posted on Pinterest from my blog…mostly my DIY stuff…some comment on the actual post but just alot of lurking(?). But that’s me…it could be that the content of my blog doesn’t rock their socks…or whatever…As long as people took the time to check out my blog, I’ll take it.

    • “Lurking” hehe, yea, I get a lot of that too! Even though I’ve been blogging for almost a yr now, still trying to gauge what brings people in and keeps them. Obviously great content of course…but it’s nice when you get new people right?! I’ll take new visitors any day But you’re right Christine, sometimes what we have isnt for everyone, and thats totally cool…can’t please everyone right?! Thx for your thoughts lady! XO

  2. I’ve had a few posts go “crazy” with tons of hits – both guest posts and some on my own site. But what I find is that I get an ongoing “bump” but not a significant one. I think that some DO check out the rest of your blog but most/some are just there for that post.

I’ve had and have steady growth but that’s from, I believe, the day in day out original content and networking. I get more sustained growth from other bigger bloggers taking an interest than from any one particular viral post.

I like to interact with my readers – on the comment page, on twitter and via email. I know (I hope – touch wood) that the day will come when it’ll be MUCH more challenging to do so because of volume. It’s come close a few times already.

I wonder – will any one blog be ever as large as the big design-y blogs that started 5-8 years ago? Is the market too saturated now? I mean, when they started, having a collage was a BIG deal. Now – meh…

    • haven’t had much luck in this department, but have not been pinning a lot of my new stuff…needa get on that and hopefully that can drive some more people to check out my blog and like it maybe :)

      • Yea, it’s a bit of everything I think…being a blogger is a ton of work! If I had the money, I’d hire someone to do the marketing leg work for me! hehe! Yes, Pinterest it up Megan! You’ll get hooked! hehe XO

    • That “bump” is what I’m scared of…I’m enjoying the added growth lately, and I’m hoping it doesn’t stop (knock on wood) I do get a lot of hits from Pinterest, but also from other referrers: stumbleupon, google searches, and a few hits from other blogs…so that’s a good thing, that the hits aren’t just coming from Pinterest.

And yes, totally agree that the daily content, and all the blog mingling is where you get the majority of your audience…it’s a lot of work that not many people realize. You gotta market yourself like crazy…you can’t just expect to write a post and people will find you…gotta do the leg work.

Interaction is key! I always make it a point to comment and to tweet back to readers. I think it sux when you comment on someone’s blog and they don’t comment back. Maybe they’re busy, I dunno..but it’s always polite to at least acknowledge someone who took the time to write a thoughtful comment. Do you find readers on twitter and chat? Or do you wait for them to find you and then chat?

I’m hoping we all still have that opportunity to become big! Blogging wasn’t even on my radar back then, so I can’t compare. It’s all about adapting and thinking ahead…and that’s our goal now…what’s bigger and better than collages?…brainstorming! For me, having a design background, I would always have to come up w/ new trends looming in the air, trends or styles that have not yet even hit the runway or been utilized…guess I gotta put that kind of thinking to good use on this blog now!

Thx for your thoughts Sandra! It’s always nice to chit chat about bloggy blog stuff! XO

  3. It is exciting to have a post get big attention, but my creativity and drive to keep going and creating comes from 1) my love of it but 2) the people who have decided to subscribe or follow me in some way for the long haul. That really touches me. I don’t have a ton of followers yet (I’m new), but the fact that someone thinks my content is worth their time means TONS to me. So that kind of keeps the lure of “viral” in check. :)

But congrats on your viral post! It’s still exciting!

    • Yes!! You gotta love what you’re doing…people will see right through you if you don’t! You’ll get there Kristy, I know you will…blogging is a lot of work and dedication…but the rewards (people who you’ll meet, those that believe in you, people who resonate w/ you) are def worth it all! Thx for the warm wishes and your thoughts! XO

  4. Yeah, Louise!!! Way to go. Celebrate it for whatever it is. :)
I’ve had a handful of posts pick up a little bit of Pinterest traffic and they caused temporary fluctuations but not a major change. I think I’m pretty much the same way though as a Pinterest user. XO, MJ

    • Thx MJ! Heck yea I’m celebrating! Doing cartwheels! hehe I’m hoping the growth doesn’t stop, or at the very least…not go down too much =/ crossing fingers. Gotta do a brainstorming sesh about how to keep orig content coming and keeping new followers & gaining more…soo much work! hehe Thx for your thoughts on this discussion, lady! Much appreciated! XO

  5. That’s awesome that your traffic jumped! hooray!

My Gallery Wall post gets lots of random traffic, but mostly from StumbleUpon. And I think most of those visitors just check it out and then move along.

Hopefully your views keep up! :)

    • Thx Ash! And yes, Stumbleupon is notorious for lookee loos! I think mainly cuz of how it operates…yer jes scrolling through so many diff posts at one time. I get lots of hits from them too, but not many who’ll stick around for a while! Crossing fingers that my hits increase or stay pretty leveled for now. Thx for your thoughts lady! Really appreciate it! XO
